I grew up on Curaçao, glued to How It’s Made, and watching raw materials being transformed into finished products planted a lifelong urge to become an engineer.

Unfortunately, the island has little manufacturing and little need for automation. I moved to the Netherlands to chase that interest. My first job delivered exactly what I’d hoped for, designing and building custom automated machinery. It never felt like work, it was more like a puzzle that was paying me as I solved it.

Then COVID hit. The company struggled, and I had to move on. My next role, at a much larger firm, still involved machine design, but the scale and relentless deadlines turned me into a cog in an unlubricated gear train. Long hours spent making someone else’s dream run left me drained and wondering why the fun had vanished.

After a short sabbatical, I decided that work needed to feel like play again. Around that time Daan, an ex-colleague who shares similar passion, called. We had often joked about launching our own shop “one day.” We realized the logical step was to stop joking and start building. And so we did.
